Skill Level

What is Skill Level?

Skill level is a feature within the aboutGOLF Simulator Software which allows you to affect more distance and better accuracy of any shot, or make putting easier. When skill level is set to zero, the distances and accuracy will be equal to playing outside where there is no such feature as Skill Level.

Why Does This Feature Exist in the aboutGOLF Simulator?

Simply put: for fun. It’s fun to play a round with a 4 year old who will be rewarded with shot distances and accuracies equal or better than yours, and if grandpa is in the group, he can get back that lost distance.

When the simulator is used for Team Building exercises, the raw beginner feels a part of the team as it competes with other teams in a Closest to the Pin contest. You can’t believe how excited a three year old will get when he makes a hole in one. So, Skill Level is a feature intended to make the experience in the simulator more fun.

How Does Skill Level Work?

One of the first things you learn from the training document is how to create or Add Players. In fact you will be greeted with Add Player before going to the range or to a round. One of your options under Add Player is Skill Level. Once in Skill Level you are able to create a player’s skill level according to levels of Experience such as Youth, Novice, Amateur, Scratch or Senior. Each experience level has a pre-determined amount of skill level ‘boost’ providing for more distance, more accuracy or to make more putts.

You can also utilize the pre-determined levels by entering a player’s handicap, or you can customize a player’s levels using the customize button. A player’s Skill Level, by default, is set to zero. So unless you purposely change a player’s skill level every player will be set to play at a level of zero.

  • (below handicap option) - The % value selected will be used to calculate the final handicap value for the golfer in the round (based on the golfer’s actual handicap and whether absolute or relative handicaps are selected along with whether the course rating & slope value is used).
  •  Course Rating & Slope (below % option) - Select yes or no to apply this value to the handicap. The course rating indicates the difficulty of the tees selected for a "0" handicap (scratch) golfer. If the course rating is above par, then it plays tougher than average. The slope rating is how much harder a set of tees plays for a 20 handicap ("bogey") golfer than a scratch golfer. These values are pre-set.

  • The ball is hit into an unplayable lie resulting in a forced drop situation.
  • The ball is hit into a free drop area, such as a cart path, resulting in an optional drop situation.  Free drops do not add a stroke to the score.
  • The user chooses to take a drop at the start of a shot for some reason, such as to avoid a hazard, resulting in an optional drop situation.

Drop Ball Considerations

  • The game determines the new ball position and the round continues if the dropped ball location does not end up closer to the hole, in an unplayable lie, or in an invalid swing location.
  • If the ball comes to rest in an unplayable lie during a drop, the game will allow the user to drop the ball again.
  • After coming to rest in an unplayable lie 2 times, the game will place the ball at the release location of the second drop.
  • If the ball came to rest in a free drop area, the user will be allowed to use this location or drop again (if they have not tried 2 times).
  • When choosing to drop the ball after landing in an area with no valid swings, the game will not automatically place the ball if the ball lands in an unplayable lie 2 times. Instead the game will continue to prompt to drop the ball until it lands in a valid location.

Auto Drop

Turn On the Auto Drop option at the Scoring screen if you would like the game to automatically select a drop location after hitting the ball out of bounds or into a hazard (unplayable lie).  *Note:  The Auto Drop option is not available for Scramble play.

Aiming Your Shot

For each shot, a default aim direction is selected by the game. The default aim location is a starting point, and does not take into account wind conditions, obstacles, and lie. Use the top view, lie and wind meter to help you decide how to aim your shot.

To change the aim of your shot:

  • Click on the Aim button on the bottom toolbar.
  • Select the right or left arrow keys to change your aim.
  • Click Accept to accept the new aim or Reset to return to the original aim location.

Lie

The lie graphic at the lower left of the screen above the toolbar displays the terrain for the ball location. The lie graphic will be updated after a player hits a shot. The lie information should be used along with the Elevation Change information (Elev.) displayed in the upper left of the screen to make aim adjustments. For example, if the current lie is in the rough or in a sand trap, the shot should be aimed farther than if the shot were from the fairway, as it requires more power.

Putting Tools / Grid

During a round, there are several tools that will help you with your putting including:

  • Change from full mode to putt mode when your ball is close to but not on the green.
  • Turn the flag on or off.
  • Use the grid to understand the slope of the green.

Change from full to putt mode

When the ball is close to but not on the green, you will see a red “Full” swing warning.  This warning is to remind you to hit a chip/full shot instead of a putting shot because the ball is not on the green.

If  you prefer to take a putt shot, click on the shot type option.  You will see the hitting location change to putt.

Grid

Click the grid button to select the type of grid to display on the green, or to turn off the grid. The grid is used to view the elevation on the green (or close to the green) in relation to the ball location.

When the ball is close enough to the green for the grid to display, the elevation of the ball will be used as a reference point unless the ball is above or below the surface of the green in which case the elevation of the pin will be used as the reference point. The lie image should also be used to obtain specific information about the ball’s current position.

Spectrum Grid

Color variations (cool/warm) indicate the elevation of the green compared to the ball location. Cool colors (blue) indicate lower elevations while warm colors (red/orange) indicate higher elevations. Green colored areas indicate the same elevation as the ball location.

Line Grid

Marbles travelling on lines indicate the slope.
